What's a Good Itinerary for
7 or 10 Days in Tanzania? Complete Day-by-Day Plans — Tarangire, Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara & a Zanzibar Extension

Tanzania's northern safari circuit is one of the most reliably spectacular wildlife destinations on earth, and both 7 and 10 days are genuinely good amounts of time to see it properly — the right choice depends on your budget, how much you want to add Zanzibar, and how much driving you're willing to do. This guide lays out exactly what a well-paced version of each itinerary looks like, day by day, so you can see precisely what you'd be booking before you book it.

7-day: Northern circuit only 10-day: Circuit + Zanzibar From $2,450 (7-day) From $3,650 (10-day)

The Short Version

7 Days or 10 Days — Which Should You Book?

Seven days is the right length if you want the complete core safari experience — Tarangire, the Serengeti, and Ngorongoro Crater — without a beach extension or a lot of spare time. It's a well-paced, not-rushed trip that covers the three parks almost every visitor wants to see.

Ten days is the right length if you want either a deeper safari (an extra Serengeti day, plus Lake Manyara) or you want to add three nights in Zanzibar at the end for beach time, Stone Town, and a change of pace after days of early-morning game drives. Most of our clients who can spare the extra days choose the ten-day version specifically for the Zanzibar extension.

Best for
Shorter trips, tighter budgets, wildlife-only focus First-time visitors wanting the complete Tanzania experience

Our honest recommendation

If this is a once-in-a-lifetime trip and you can spare the extra three days and roughly $1,200 per person, we'd nudge you toward the 10-day version — ending a demanding safari with beach days in Zanzibar is a genuinely good trip shape, and very few visitors regret adding it. If your main constraint is time off work rather than budget, the 7-day version loses none of the core safari experience.

Day-by-Day Plan

The Complete 7-Day Itinerary

This is the itinerary we recommend most often for a first safari with limited time — the three essential parks of the northern circuit, at a pace that doesn't feel rushed.

Arrival Arusha · ~1,400m
Arrive Kilimanjaro Airport — Transfer to Arusha
Arusha Hotel Dinner included
You land at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and transfer about an hour to your hotel in Arusha, the safari capital of northern Tanzania. No game drives today — this is a settling-in day. Your guide meets you for a trip briefing covering the days ahead, what to expect, and any last questions.
Tip: An afternoon arrival works well — you'll have time to rest before an early start the next morning.
Elephants & Baobabs Tarangire National Park
Arusha to Tarangire National Park
Tarangire ~2 hr drive Afternoon game drive
A scenic morning drive brings you to Tarangire, famous for its ancient baobab trees and some of the largest elephant herds in Tanzania — often several hundred strong during the dry season, when they cluster around the Tarangire River. Afternoon and evening game drives make the most of the golden light. Tarangire is also one of the quieter parks on the circuit, a nice, unhurried introduction before the busier Serengeti.
Wildlife: Tarangire has one of the highest elephant densities of any East African park — this is often where first-timers get their closest elephant encounters of the whole trip.
The Endless Plains Serengeti National Park
Tarangire to the Serengeti
Serengeti ~4–5 hr drive with stops Game drive en route
The drive to the Serengeti itself becomes a game drive, often passing through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area's highlands with views over the crater rim before descending onto the vast Serengeti plains. "Serengeti" comes from the Maasai word for "endless plains," and the first sight of that horizon is one of the defining moments of a Tanzania safari for most visitors.
Pace: This is a longer travel day, but broken up by stops and sightings — bring snacks and settle in for the views.
Full Day Serengeti National Park
Full Day of Serengeti Game Drives
Morning & afternoon drives Picnic lunch in the bush
A full day dedicated to exploring the Serengeti's central Seronera area, renowned for consistent year-round predator sightings — lion, leopard, and cheetah all favour this region. Your guide will plan the day around recent sightings reported by the camp and other guides. Depending on the season, this may include the wildebeest migration itself (see the timing section below).
Photography: Soft early-morning and late-afternoon light makes these the best windows for photos — a mid-day rest at camp is normal and expected.
To the Crater Rim Ngorongoro Conservation Area
Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater Rim
Crater rim / Karatu ~4 hr drive with stops Afternoon at leisure
A scenic drive back across the Serengeti and up onto the Ngorongoro highlands, arriving at your lodge on or near the crater rim by afternoon, leaving time to settle in and enjoy the views before tomorrow's early descent into the crater itself.
Temperature: The crater rim sits around 2,300m and gets genuinely cold at night — pack a warm layer for this lodge even though the rest of the safari is warm.
The Crater Floor Ngorongoro Crater → Arusha
Ngorongoro Crater Floor Game Drive — Return to Arusha
Full morning in the crater ~4 hr drive back to Arusha
An early descent onto the crater floor — a self-contained natural amphitheatre about 20km across, packed with wildlife including one of Tanzania's best chances of spotting black rhino, alongside dense populations of lion, hippo, and flamingo-lined soda lakes. By early afternoon you climb back out and drive to Arusha, arriving in the evening.
Density: Ngorongoro Crater has one of the highest densities of wildlife per square kilometre of anywhere in Africa — sightings here tend to come quickly and often.
Departure Arusha → Airport
Departure Day
Transfer to Kilimanjaro Airport
A relaxed final morning — depending on your flight time, there may be room for some last souvenir shopping in Arusha before your transfer to the airport for your departure flight.
Flights: Book outbound flights for afternoon or evening where possible, to avoid an unnecessarily early final morning.

Day-by-Day Plan

The Complete 10-Day Itinerary

This is our most-booked itinerary — the same core circuit as the 7-day version, with an extra Serengeti day, Lake Manyara added, and three nights in Zanzibar to close out the trip.

Arrival Arusha · ~1,400m
Arrive Kilimanjaro Airport — Transfer to Arusha
Arusha Hotel Dinner included
You land at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and transfer about an hour to your hotel in Arusha. A settling-in day with a trip briefing from your guide covering the days ahead.
Tip: An afternoon arrival works well — you'll have time to rest before an early start the next morning.
Elephants & Baobabs Tarangire National Park
Arusha to Tarangire National Park
Tarangire ~2 hr drive Afternoon game drive
A scenic morning drive to Tarangire, home to huge elephant herds and ancient baobab trees. Afternoon and evening game drives make the most of the golden light in one of the quieter parks on the circuit.
Wildlife: Tarangire has one of the highest elephant densities of any East African park.
The Endless Plains Serengeti National Park
Tarangire to the Serengeti
Serengeti ~4–5 hr drive with stops Game drive en route
The drive itself becomes a game drive, often passing through the Ngorongoro highlands before descending onto the Serengeti's famous endless plains — one of the defining views of the whole trip.
Pace: A longer travel day, broken up by stops and sightings.
Full Day Serengeti National Park — Central
Full Day: Central Serengeti (Seronera)
Morning & afternoon drives Picnic lunch in the bush
A full day exploring the central Seronera area, renowned for year-round predator sightings — lion, leopard, and cheetah all favour this region.
Photography: Soft early-morning and late-afternoon light makes these the best windows for photos.
Full Day Serengeti National Park — Extended
Full Day: Deeper Serengeti Exploration
Full-day game drive Flexible route by season
This is the extra day the 7-day itinerary doesn't have. Depending on the season, your guide will head toward whichever part of the ecosystem the migration or best current sightings suggest — the southern plains, the western corridor, or further north — rather than retracing the previous day's route. It's this second full day that most often produces the trip's standout sighting.
Why it matters: One extra day in the Serengeti disproportionately raises your odds of a major sighting — predators on a kill, a river crossing, or simply more time to let a slow afternoon turn into something memorable.
To the Crater Rim Ngorongoro Conservation Area
Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater Rim
Crater rim / Karatu ~4 hr drive with stops
A scenic drive back across the Serengeti and up onto the Ngorongoro highlands, arriving at your lodge on or near the crater rim by afternoon.
Temperature: The crater rim sits around 2,300m and gets genuinely cold at night — pack a warm layer.
The Crater Floor Ngorongoro Crater → Lake Manyara
Ngorongoro Crater Floor — On to Lake Manyara
Morning in the crater Afternoon at Lake Manyara
An early descent onto the crater floor for one of Africa's densest wildlife concentrations, including a strong chance of black rhino. In the afternoon you continue to Lake Manyara National Park, known for its tree-climbing lions, dense forest edging the lake, and large flocks of flamingos along the shoreline — a scenic, varied final safari stop quite different in character from the other parks.
Look up: Lake Manyara's lions are famous for resting in the branches of acacia and sausage trees — an unusual sight guides will be watching for all afternoon.
Safari to Beach Arusha → Zanzibar
Fly to Zanzibar
Domestic flight ~2 hr via Arusha or Kilimanjaro Airport Beach resort, afternoon free
A short morning transfer to the airstrip and a domestic flight to Zanzibar — a genuinely dramatic change of scenery, swapping dusty safari vehicles for white sand and turquoise water within a few hours. The rest of the day is free to settle into your beach resort.
Logistics: Confirm your Zanzibar entry travel insurance (required separately from the mainland policy) before this flight.
The Islands Zanzibar
Stone Town & Beach Day
Optional Stone Town tour Beach, snorkelling, or spice tour
A flexible day — many travelers spend the morning exploring Stone Town's winding alleys, the old slave market memorial, and the night food market, then return to the beach for the afternoon. Others skip the town entirely and simply rest. A spice tour or snorkelling trip to a nearby sandbank are both popular half-day add-ons.
Dress note: Modest dress is appreciated in Stone Town and other non-resort areas — covered shoulders and knees for both men and women.
Departure Zanzibar → Airport
Departure Day
Transfer to Zanzibar Airport
A final relaxed morning on the beach before your transfer to Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ) for your departure flight — either home directly or connecting back through Dar es Salaam.
Flights: ZNZ has direct international connections to several hubs, so you may not need to route back through the mainland at all.

What's Included & What It Costs

Safari pricing varies hugely by accommodation tier — the figures below reflect a comfortable, mid-range tented camp and lodge standard, the most common choice for both itineraries. Luxury camps can roughly double these figures; budget camping safaris can bring them down by a third or more.

When to Go

Best Time for a Tanzania Safari

Unlike Kilimanjaro, where the question is mostly about rain, safari timing is also about the wildebeest migration — a year-round circular movement through the Serengeti ecosystem that peaks in different places at different times.

JanExcellentCalving season begins. Dry, warm.
FebExcellentPeak calving. Huge predator action.
MarGoodStill calving. Rains building.
AprAvoidLong rains. Muddy roads, lowest prices.
MayAvoidHeaviest rains. Some camps close.
JunRisingDrying out. Migration heading north.
JulPeakDramatic river crossings begin.
AugPeakBest river crossings. Busiest, book early.
SepExcellentMigration in the north. Dry, clear.
OctVery GoodMigration heading south again.
NovMixedShort rains. Still good wildlife viewing.
DecGoodDrying out. Migration returning south.
Our scheduling recommendation

July–October is the classic choice — dry, reliable, and home to the famous river crossings, though also the busiest and most expensive window, so book your lodges months ahead. late January–February is our favourite underrated alternative: the southern Serengeti calving season brings extraordinary predator action, drier weather than the rains that follow, and noticeably lower prices than July–September for a very similar quality of sighting.

What to Bring

Safari & Zanzibar Packing Essentials

Safari packing is far lighter than a Kilimanjaro packing list — this is a quick-reference summary, not the exhaustive version. Think neutral colours, sun protection, and a bag light enough for small-plane luggage limits if your itinerary includes a Zanzibar flight.

Safari clothing
Neutral-coloured clothing (khaki, olive, brown) — avoid bright colours and all-white or all-black
A warm layer for early mornings and the Ngorongoro crater rim
Wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses
Comfortable closed shoes for camp; sandals for lodge downtime
Health & sun protection
High-SPF sunscreen and lip balm
Insect repellent, ideally with DEET, for malaria-risk areas
Any personal or malaria prevention medication, in carry-on luggage
Gear
Binoculars — one pair per person makes a real difference
Camera with a zoom lens, plus spare batteries or a power bank
A soft-sided duffel rather than a hard suitcase, for small-plane luggage limits on the Zanzibar flight
For the Zanzibar leg
Swimwear and light beach clothing
A modest cover-up (shoulders and knees) for Stone Town and other non-resort areas
Reef-safe sunscreen if you plan to snorkel

Everything Answered

Tanzania Itinerary — Frequently Asked Questions

  • Yes. Seven days is enough to cover the core northern circuit — Tarangire, the Serengeti, and Ngorongoro Crater — at a comfortable pace, including two full nights in the Serengeti so you're not constantly packing and moving. It doesn't leave room for a Zanzibar extension or the more remote southern and western parks, but it covers everything most first-time visitors actually want to see.
  • A 10-day trip comfortably covers the full northern safari circuit — Tarangire, two full days in the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, and Lake Manyara — plus a 3-night extension to Zanzibar for beach time, Stone Town, and the spice tour. It's our most popular itinerary for exactly this reason: it feels complete rather than rushed, and ends on the beach rather than straight back to the airport.
  • With Resilience Safaris, the 7-day northern circuit safari starts from approximately $2,450 per person, and the 10-day safari plus Zanzibar extension starts from approximately $3,650 per person, both based on mid-range accommodation with two travelers sharing. Luxury camps can roughly double this; a more basic camping safari can bring it down meaningfully. International flights, visas, personal travel insurance, tips, and optional extras like a hot air balloon flight are not included.
  • For most travelers combining a safari with one other thing, Zanzibar is the easier, more natural pairing — it's a short flight away, requires no special fitness, and gives you a genuine rest after early-morning game drives. Kilimanjaro is a serious undertaking in its own right (6–9 days of trekking) and is usually better treated as its own dedicated trip, or added before a safari rather than after one, so you're not climbing on tired legs. See our Kilimanjaro route guides if you're considering combining both.
  • June through October is the main dry season, with reliable wildlife viewing and the dramatic Serengeti river crossings around July and August — also the busiest and most expensive months, so book lodges early. December through March is calving season in the southern Serengeti, with excellent predator action and lower prices. April and May bring heavy rain and are the quietest and least expensive months, though some camps close.
  • Yes — both itineraries work well for families, since game drives are vehicle-based and require no particular fitness. Some camps set a minimum age (commonly 6–8 years) for safety reasons, so we tailor lodge choices to your children's ages when booking. The Zanzibar extension is a particularly good fit for families, breaking up long game-drive days with pool and beach time.
  • A purpose-built 4x4 safari vehicle with a pop-up roof hatch is standard and effectively necessary — park roads are unpaved, and the raised viewing position matters for both game viewing and photography. This is included as standard in every Resilience Safaris itinerary; it isn't an optional upgrade.
