Park Overview

Arusha National Park — Tanzania's Most Underrated Day Trip

Arusha National Park is the most accessible national park in Tanzania — 25 km northeast of Arusha city, 35 km from Kilimanjaro International Airport, and 58 km from Moshi — and it is consistently underestimated. Its 137 km² contain three completely distinct ecosystems: the montane rainforest below the slopes of Mount Meru (4,566 m), the volcanic caldera of Ngurdoto Crater, and the seven alkaline Momella Lakes in the north-east. Each ecosystem supports different wildlife, different birds, and a different visual atmosphere.

What makes Arusha National Park genuinely unique in Tanzania's northern circuit is not the density of wildlife — this is not a Big Five destination in the traditional sense — but the activities it permits that no other northern park allows. Walking safaris with an armed ranger through active wildlife habitat, canoeing on Momella Lakes among hippo and buffalo, and viewpoints with both Mount Meru and Mount Kilimanjaro on the horizon simultaneously. These are experiences unavailable anywhere else in northern Tanzania.

The park is also the correct answer for a specific traveller: the guest who arrives in Arusha or Moshi and has one day before a Kilimanjaro climb, one afternoon after a safari ends, or simply wants a completely different experience from the classic game-drive-only format. A 1-day Arusha National Park safari from Resilience Safaris combines a morning game drive through the Momella Lakes circuit, a ranger-led walking safari into the Ngurdoto forest, and an optional canoe safari on Small Momella Lake — covering all three ecosystems in a single day. No overnight required.

Momella Lakes canoe
The Momella Lakes canoe safari — Tanzania's most intimate wildlife experience

The seven Momella Lakes were formed when Mount Meru erupted approximately 250,000 years ago, creating a series of shallow alkaline lakes each with a different mineral composition, colour, and wildlife community. The canoe safari on Small Momella Lake is conducted in near silence — paddling within metres of hippo watching from the shallows, observing buffalo, giraffe, and waterbuck grazing along the shoreline, and watching flamingo, pelican, and African fish eagle on the water above. The experience is unlike any game drive: the lake surface removes the distance between observer and animal that a vehicle always creates. The canoe safari lasts 2 to 2.5 hours and is available as an add-on to the 1-day programme.

Walking safari ranger forest
The walking safari — Africa experienced on foot

Walking safaris in Arusha National Park begin at Momella Gate and are conducted with a TANAPA-licensed armed ranger through the park's montane rainforest and along the Ngurdoto Crater rim. On foot, the colobus monkey colonies in the forest canopy are closer, the bird species more audible, and the volcanic landscape more physically present than from inside a vehicle. The walking safari covers the forest trail to Tululusia Waterfall (approximately 28 metres high) and the Ngurdoto Crater rim — a 300-metre-deep caldera whose floor is too soft for vehicles, making the rim trail the only way to see it. Walking safaris are available as a half-day morning session, fully integrated into the 1-day programme.

Kilimanjaro view Arusha National Park
Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro — both visible from the same viewpoint

Arusha National Park occupies a rare geographical position: situated between Mount Meru (4,566 m, the second-highest peak in Tanzania) and Mount Kilimanjaro (5,895 m, Africa's highest), the park's Momella Lakes viewpoints are one of the few places on Earth where both peaks are visible simultaneously on a clear morning. The guides know the best positions and the optimal time windows — typically 07:00 to 09:30 before clouds build on the upper slopes. The double-mountain backdrop is one of the most photographed views in all of Tanzania.

Arusha National Park giraffe
Wildlife — giraffe, colobus, buffalo, hippo, and 600+ birds

Arusha National Park holds one of Africa's largest Masai giraffe populations — the guide consistently encounters giraffe on the Momella Lakes game drive circuit. The black-and-white colobus monkey population in the montane forest is the most reliable species on the walking safari. Buffalo are common throughout the park. Hippo occupy the Momella Lakes and the Ngurdoto Crater floor. The park's 600+ bird species includes the crowned crane, African fish eagle, Narina trogon, Hartlaub's turaco, flamingo, pelican, and numerous East African montane forest species exclusive to this altitude. For birdwatchers, Arusha National Park is among Tanzania's best single-day birding destinations.

Day Programme

1-Day Arusha National Park Full Programme

  1. The morning begins with pickup from your Arusha hotel (or Moshi hotel at a small supplement) and the 30–45 minute drive to Momella Gate. The first session is the ranger-led walking safari — the most immersive activity the park offers. Entering the montane forest on foot with an armed TANAPA ranger, the morning walk covers the Ngurdoto forest trail, the colobus monkey colonies in the canopy, the Ngurdoto Crater rim viewpoint, and the path to Tululusia Waterfall.

    1. 07:00
      Pickup from Arusha hotel

Vehicle departs Arusha. Drive northeast on the Moshi Road toward Usa River and Momella Gate. From Moshi: depart approximately 06:30 for a 90-minute drive.

    2. 07:45
Momella Gate — entry and ranger briefing

Meet the TANAPA-licensed armed ranger at Momella Gate. Park entry fee paid (included in tour price). Safety briefing before entering the forest on foot.

    3. 08:00
Walking safari — Ngurdoto forest and crater rim

Enter the montane rainforest. Black-and-white colobus monkey colonies are reliably encountered in the first 30 minutes — listen for the distinctive whooping call before spotting them in the canopy. Blue monkey also present. The guide identifies bird species: Narina trogon, Hartlaub's turaco, crowned hornbill, and sunbird species unique to this altitude.

    4. 09:30
      Ngurdoto Crater rim viewpoint

Reach the rim of Ngurdoto Crater — a 3.2 km diameter volcanic caldera 300 metres deep. The crater floor (visible below) is too soft for vehicles, making this rim viewpoint the only way to see it. Buffalo, elephant, and dik-dik are frequently spotted on the crater floor from above.

    5. 10:30
      Tululusia Waterfall

Continue to Tululusia Waterfall — approximately 28 metres high, set in a ravine surrounded by lush forest. The walk back to Momella Gate completes the morning forest circuit by 12:00.

Black-&-White ColobusBlue MonkeyNgurdoto Crater rimTululusia WaterfallNarina TrogonHartlaub's TuracoMontane Forest
  2. Midday is the transition from walking to water. After a picnic lunch near Momella Gate, guests who have added the canoe safari board wooden dugout canoes on Small Momella Lake, guided by a TANAPA ranger alongside in his own canoe. The 2 to 2.5-hour canoe safari drifts silently along the shoreline — the quietest, most intimate wildlife encounter the park offers.

    1. 12:00
      Picnic lunch near Momella Gate

Packed lunch boxes provided. Rest and debrief from the morning walk. Mount Meru fills the western sky above the treeline.

    2. 12:45
Canoe safari — Small Momella Lake (optional)

Board the traditional wooden canoe at the Small Momella Lake jetty. The lake was formed 250,000 years ago by Mount Meru's volcanic activity. Each of the seven Momella Lakes has a different mineral and algae composition — Small Momella supports the highest concentration of hippo and waterbirds.

    3. 13:00
On the water — hippo, giraffe, flamingo, and buffalo

Paddle silently along the shoreline. Hippo submerge and resurface metres from the canoe. Giraffe and buffalo graze on the bank above the waterline. Flamingo stand in formation on the shallow alkaline flats. African fish eagle perches overhead. The guide identifies bird species: herons, grebes, pelican, spurwing goose, and various waders.

    4. 14:30
Return to shore — begin afternoon game drive

Exit the canoe and return to the vehicle. The afternoon game drive begins around the wider Momella Lakes circuit.

Hippo in the waterFlamingoAfrican Fish EaglePelicanGiraffe on shoreBuffalo on bankMount Meru backdrop
  3. The afternoon game drive covers the Momella Lakes circuit by 4x4 — the open savanna zones north and east of the lakes where giraffe, zebra, and waterbuck are most abundant in the afternoon hours. The guide positions for the dual Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro viewpoint while afternoon light is still clear, and maximises the time in the open zones before the return drive to Arusha. Return to Arusha city by approximately 17:30, or Moshi by approximately 18:30.

    1. 14:30
      Momella Lakes circuit game drive

Drive the open circuit around the full Momella Lakes group. Giraffe congregations of 10–20 individuals are common in the open savanna between the lakes. Zebra and waterbuck on the lake margins. Warthog family groups on the short grass.

    2. 15:30
Dual mountain viewpoint — Meru and Kilimanjaro

Position at the Small Momella viewpoint — one of the few locations on Earth where Mount Meru (4,566 m, western sky) and Mount Kilimanjaro (5,895 m, eastern sky) are simultaneously visible. Afternoon photography is often better than morning due to lower haze on the Kilimanjaro summit.

    3. 16:30
Exit Momella Gate — return drive

Exit the park. Return drive to Arusha (approximately 45 minutes) or Moshi (approximately 90 minutes). Hotel drop-off approximately 17:30–18:30 depending on destination.

What guests say about the Arusha National Park day trip

★★★★★
Thomas R. — Germany

"I had one day in Arusha before my Kilimanjaro climb and I expected very little. The canoe safari on Momella Lakes was the most unexpected wildlife moment of my entire Tanzania trip — a hippo surfaced three metres from the canoe and just watched us. The colobus monkeys in the forest were extraordinary. I would return to Arusha National Park before any other park."

"The walking safari was unlike anything I had done on previous game drive safaris. Being on foot in an active wildlife area completely changes the experience — you notice everything differently. The ranger was extraordinary, identifying birds by sound before we could even see them. And then to see Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro both in the same viewpoint from the lake — that photograph alone was worth the whole trip."

"I was sceptical about Arusha National Park because I had already done the Serengeti and Ngorongoro. But this is a completely different kind of safari. Walking in the forest, the sounds, the smells, the way the guide made us freeze when a colobus moved above — it felt like the Serengeti could never give you this. Book the canoe. It is worth every cent of the $25 add-on."

Expert Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Momella Gate — the main entrance to Arusha National Park — is approximately 25 km northeast of Arusha city centre, around 30 to 45 minutes by road depending on traffic. From Moshi, the drive is approximately 58 km and takes 60 to 90 minutes. From Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA/JRO), the park is approximately 35 km — about 40 minutes. This proximity is what makes it the ideal day trip option: no overnight accommodation required, and both Arusha and Moshi hotel pickup and return are covered within a normal day excursion window.
  • On a 1-day programme covering both the walking safari and the game drive, guests almost always see Masai giraffe (one of Africa's largest populations — groups of 10 to 20 are typical on the Momella Lakes circuit), black-and-white colobus monkey (very reliable on the morning walking safari), blue monkey, buffalo, waterbuck, warthog, and numerous bird species including flamingo, African fish eagle, and crowned crane. Hippo are regularly observed from the canoe and occasionally from the lake shore game drive. Zebra, bushbuck, and dik-dik are likely. Elephant and leopard are present in the park but rarely seen — do not expect them. There are no lions, cheetah, or rhino in Arusha National Park. For birdwatchers, the park's 600+ recorded species includes many montane forest specialities not found in any other northern Tanzania park.
  • Yes — the canoe safari is a TANAPA-authorised activity conducted by a trained ranger guide who paddles alongside guests in his own canoe. Small Momella Lake's alkaline water and shallow depth make it safe for canoeing. Guests paddle their own canoe (no special experience required) while the ranger maintains awareness of hippo positions throughout. The ranger's instructions are to be followed at all times. The main safety consideration is maintaining a respectful distance from hippo — the guide manages this throughout the activity. The experience is suitable for adults and children aged 8 and above. Guests are advised to bring sun protection, a hat, and to dress in layers for the cooler morning canoe.
  • Yes — and for a specific reason. Arusha National Park offers activities and experiences that the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, and Lake Manyara do not: walking in active wildlife habitat with a ranger, canoeing alongside hippo and giraffe, and montane forest birdwatching at altitude. If your Tanzania itinerary has already covered the classic game-drive northern circuit, the Arusha National Park day trip is not a repetition — it is a different type of safari experience that complements what you have already seen. The colobus monkey in the forest canopy, the canoe on Momella Lakes, and the dual mountain viewpoint with both Meru and Kilimanjaro are genuinely unavailable anywhere else on the northern circuit.
  • Arusha National Park is excellent year-round, but the dry seasons (January–February and June–October) offer the clearest Kilimanjaro views from the Momella viewpoints and the most concentrated wildlife around the lakes. The long rains (March–May) make the forest and crater landscape dramatically green — excellent for photography and birdwatching (migratory species are present), but some tracks may be muddy. The short rains (November–December) bring occasional afternoon showers but rarely disrupt a morning walking safari and canoe safari programme. Unlike the Serengeti or Ngorongoro, Arusha National Park has no seasonal crowd peaks — the park is consistently uncrowded throughout the year, which is part of its appeal.
