Safari Overview

Three Parks, Three Days — The Complete Circuit

The 3-day group joining safari is the most popular group joining itinerary we operate — the complete three-park Tanzania northern circuit at the most accessible price point available for a three-day overnight safari. It covers Tarangire, Lake Manyara, and the Ngorongoro Crater in three consecutive days with two overnight stops, an expert licensed naturalist guide, a shared 4x4 safari vehicle, and all park entry fees included.

The itinerary covers three of the most distinctive and rewarding parks in Tanzania, each with its own character: Tarangire delivers Tanzania's greatest elephant concentration in a dramatic baobab and river landscape. Lake Manyara is East Africa's most distinctive short-drive park — tree-climbing lions found nowhere else, flamingo flocks on the alkaline lake, and 400+ bird species in the groundwater forest. The Ngorongoro Crater is Africa's most wildlife-dense location — 25,000 large mammals in a single ancient caldera, all resident year-round, with the best black rhino encounter probability in Africa and the famous thick-maned crater lion prides.

On a group joining departure, the vehicle holds up to seven guests from different bookings. The guide, vehicle quality, park access, and overnight accommodation standard are excellent — what you share is the vehicle and the schedule. The group joining rate saves approximately $300–$500 per person compared to a private vehicle booking of the same itinerary, making a three-park Tanzania circuit genuinely accessible to solo travellers and budget-conscious guests.

Tarangire
Day 1 — Tarangire: Tanzania's greatest elephant experience

Tarangire National Park delivers the finest elephant experience in Tanzania on any budget. The full afternoon arrival drive covers the Tarangire River zone — herds of 300 or more elephants congregating at the water and moving through the ancient baobab woodland. The entire afternoon is spent in the park: from arrival at approximately 10:30 through to sunset. Lion, leopard, cheetah, giraffe, oryx, eland, zebra, and the unique lesser kudu are all regularly encountered. The baobab woodland at golden hour is one of the most photographed landscapes in East Africa.

Lake Manyara tree-climbing lions
Day 2 — Lake Manyara: tree-climbing lions and the flamingo lake

Lake Manyara National Park is one of Tanzania's most distinctive wildlife experiences — home to the only tree-climbing lion population in East Africa, a phenomenon that puzzled researchers for decades. The park covers 325 km² at the base of the Rift Valley escarpment, with an extraordinary transition from dense groundwater forest (blue monkey, yellow baboon, 400+ bird species) to an alkaline soda lake with flamingo flocks, pelicans, and hippo pools. Lake Manyara is a morning drive park — the best wildlife activity is before midday, perfectly suited to the 3-day circuit's morning drive timing before the afternoon drive to the Ngorongoro crater rim.

Ngorongoro Crater
Day 3 — Ngorongoro Crater: Africa's greatest wildlife sanctuary

The Ngorongoro Crater is the final and most dramatic destination of the three-park circuit — a complete dawn-to-afternoon inside Africa's most wildlife-dense sanctuary. 25,000 large mammals in a 260 km² caldera that has never been grazed out or depleted because the caldera walls prevent large-scale animal movement in or out. The resident population — crater lion prides, ~30 black rhino, 5,000+ buffalo, 4,000 zebra, hippo, flamingo on the crater lake, and leopard in the Lerai Forest — is accessible year-round in every season. The Ngorongoro Crater on a group joining safari is identical to the Crater on a private safari: the same guide, the same vehicle, the same descent, the same wildlife.

Day-by-Day Programme

3-Day Group Joining Safari Itinerary

  1. Day 1 opens with hotel pickups across Arusha and Moshi and the 2.5-hour drive southwest to Tarangire National Park. Arriving by late morning, the full afternoon is spent inside the park — the Tarangire River, the baobab woodland, the open savanna, and the park's extraordinary elephant concentration. The overnight is in a comfortable Tarangire lodge or tented camp.

    1. 07:30
Hotel pickups from Arusha and Moshi

The shared vehicle collects all joining guests from their hotels and guesthouses in Arusha and Moshi.

    2. 10:30
Enter Tarangire — full afternoon game drives

Begin along the Tarangire River. Elephant herds of 300+ in the riverbed and on the banks. Lion, leopard, cheetah in the riverine woodland. Giraffe, eland, oryx, and buffalo in the open savanna. Ground hornbills calling from the baobab canopy.

    3. 13:00
      Bush lunch — continue drives

Lunch boxes at the riverside picnic site. Continue immediately into the afternoon. The ancient baobab woodland in the late afternoon light is the park's finest photographic window.

    4. 18:00
Arrive Tarangire lodge — dinner and overnight

Welcome briefing. Dinner and evening by the fireside. The guide gives a wildlife briefing for the three days ahead and checks the Manyara tree-climbing lion report for tomorrow.

  2. Day 2 maximises every hour — an early Tarangire morning departure to reach Lake Manyara for a complete morning game drive, then a picnic lunch and the afternoon escarpment drive to the Ngorongoro crater rim. Lake Manyara is a morning park: the guide positions for tree-climbing lions in the first three hours when positioning probability is highest. The evening arrives at the shared crater rim lodge for tomorrow's dawn descent.

    1. 07:00
Early departure from Tarangire — drive to Lake Manyara

Early breakfast and departure. Drive north through the Rift Valley foothills. Arrive Lake Manyara National Park gate approximately 09:00.

    2. 09:00
Enter Lake Manyara — groundwater forest and tree-climbing lions

Enter the groundwater forest. Blue monkey and yellow baboon in the canopy. 400+ bird species in the forest interior. The guide uses tree-climbing lion positioning intelligence from overnight network communication.

    3. 10:00
Tree-climbing lion search — East Africa's rarest lion behaviour

Lake Manyara's tree-climbing lions are one of East Africa's most distinctive wildlife spectacles — found nowhere else in the region. The guide positions in the known tree-climbing woodland with morning network data.

    4. 11:30
Floodplain, hippo pools, and flamingo shores

The forest opens to the floodplain and lake shore. Buffalo herds in the open ground. Hippo in the pools. Flamingo flocks on the alkaline lake. 400+ bird species across the forest, floodplain, and lake.

    5. 12:30
Exit Lake Manyara — picnic lunch — drive to Ngorongoro

Exit the park. Picnic lunch at a viewpoint. Drive up the Oldeani escarpment into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Arrive crater rim lodge approximately 16:30. First view of the 260 km² caldera below at sunset.

Tree-climbing LionsFlamingo flocksHippo400+ BirdsBlue MonkeyBuffaloCrater rim view
  3. Day 3 is the climax of the three-park circuit — a complete dawn descent into the Ngorongoro Crater. The guide descends at first light with black rhino positioning confirmed from overnight guide network intelligence. The full day covers the crater floor: black rhino tracking, crater lion prides, leopard in the Lerai Forest, the hippo pool, and the flamingo shores of the Magadi crater lake, before the afternoon ascent and return drive to Arusha and Moshi.

    1. 05:30
Pre-dawn — drive to crater descent gate

Leave rim lodge before first light. Overnight guide network intelligence confirms black rhino positions for the morning. Descent gate opens at 6:00 am.

    2. 06:00
Descent into the Ngorongoro Crater at first light

The 600-metre descent road into Africa's most perfect wildlife sanctuary. Inside the crater by 6:30 am. The guide drives directly to the black rhino zone through morning caldera mist.

    3. 07:00
Black rhino tracking — Africa's best encounter opportunity

The crater's approximately 30 black rhino are the morning's primary target. Overnight guide network positioning makes encounters before 09:00 highly probable in the Ngorongoro Crater.

    4. 09:30
Crater lions, Lerai Forest, buffalo, and hippo pool

The famous thick-maned crater lion prides. 5,000+ buffalo on the open floor. Leopard in the Lerai Forest acacia. The hippo pool at the forest edge. Flamingo on the Magadi crater lake.

    5. 13:00
Picnic lunch on the Ngorongoro crater floor

Lunch with the entire 260 km² crater and 600-metre caldera walls visible in every direction. Continue drives immediately into the afternoon before the late ascent.

    6. 16:00
Crater ascent — return drive to Arusha

Exit. Drive east and down the escarpment. 3-hour drive to Arusha. Drop-offs in Arusha approximately 19:30, Moshi approximately 20:30.

What our 3-day group joining safari guests say

Nadia B.
★★★★★
Nadia B. — France

"Three parks in three days as a solo traveller. On Day 2 we found the tree-climbing lions in the first hour — two of them lying in a fig tree directly above the road. Nobody in the vehicle could speak for a moment. On Day 3 we saw a black rhino mother with a calf before 7 am in the Crater. The group joining format put me with five extraordinary people from four countries. The guide made every kilometre count."

"The 3-day group joining is genuinely the best value wildlife experience I have encountered anywhere in Africa. All three parks. Two nights. Expert guide. For $590. There is nothing missing from the experience except the privacy of the vehicle — and honestly the vehicle was great because we were only six guests. Tarangire's elephant herds, Manyara's tree-climbing lions, and the Crater at dawn. Three completely different parks. Three completely different days. I am still processing it."

"I chose the 3-day group joining over the 2-day because of Lake Manyara — I had read about the tree-climbing lions and wanted to see them. We found them on Day 2 within the first 90 minutes. The guide knew exactly where to look. The elephant herds in Tarangire on Day 1 were beyond anything I had imagined — a herd of 300 elephants crossing the road in front of us. On Day 3 in the Ngorongoro Crater I saw all Big Five. Worth every cent."

Frequently Asked Questions

  • One additional park — Lake Manyara — for approximately $210 per person more. Lake Manyara is one of Tanzania's most distinctive wildlife parks and the only location in East Africa with a tree-climbing lion population. It also delivers 400+ bird species, flamingo on the alkaline lake, hippo pools, blue monkey in the groundwater forest, and one of the most photogenic lake shore settings in the Rift Valley. If the tree-climbing lions are on your list, the 3-day is the correct itinerary — they are not accessible on the 2-day circuit which goes directly from Tarangire to the Ngorongoro Crater. The 3-day circuit is also the classic complete Tanzania three-park experience recommended to first-time Tanzania visitors as the most well-rounded introduction to the northern wildlife parks.
  • Tree-climbing lions are encountered on the majority of Lake Manyara morning drives, but not guaranteed on every visit. The guide uses overnight guide network intelligence to position for tree-climbing lion encounters in the first two hours of the morning drive — the highest probability window. Our guests encounter tree-climbing lions on approximately 75–80% of Lake Manyara morning drives. Even on drives where tree-climbing lions are not sighted, Lake Manyara delivers exceptional wildlife: the flamingo shores are always spectacular, the groundwater forest bird and primate encounter is consistent, and the floodplain hippo pools are a reliable highlight. Lake Manyara is never a disappointment regardless of the tree-climbing lion outcome.
  • Yes — solo bookings are very common on the 3-day group joining safari. You pay the per-person joining rate of $590. For the two overnight nights, solo travellers are paired in a same-gender shared twin room at both the Tarangire lodge and the crater rim lodge (included at no supplement). If you prefer a private room, a single supplement applies — please note this preference when booking. If no same-gender roommate is available, we arrange a private room at a minimal supplement automatically. Solo travellers consistently report that the social experience of the group joining vehicle — shared meals, shared wildlife moments, conversations with fellow travellers from around the world — is one of the highlights of the three days.
  • The 4-day group joining safari adds the Serengeti — a full day and overnight in the Serengeti National Park, which covers the 3-day circuit parks and adds Tanzania's most iconic wildlife destination and the beginning of the Great Migration experience. The price difference is approximately $170 per person for the 4-day option over the 3-day. If the Serengeti and the possibility of seeing the migration herds is important to you, the 4-day group joining with one Serengeti day is the recommended upgrade. If the primary goal is the three-park classic northern circuit including Lake Manyara's tree-climbing lions and the Ngorongoro Crater, the 3-day is complete and excellent in its own right.
  • All three parks deliver excellent wildlife year-round. Tarangire is most wildlife-dense in the dry season (June–October) when the Tarangire River is the only water source and all wildlife concentrates on its banks. Lake Manyara is excellent year-round — flamingo flocks are largest in the wetter months (November–May), tree-climbing lions are encountered year-round. The Ngorongoro Crater is fully excellent in every month — all 25,000 crater mammals are resident year-round and are not dependent on rainfall or migration patterns. The rainy season (April–May) offers the lowest group joining prices, fewest visitors, and the most dramatic landscapes across all three parks. Peak season departures (July–October) are busiest and highest demand for joining slots — book early.
