The Complete Northern Circuit — Minus the Migration

The 3-day Tanzania Safari covers Tarangire, Lake Manyara, and the Ngorongoro Crater — the three southern parks of Tanzania's northern wildlife circuit. It visits every essential habitat and wildlife experience in the region except the Great Serengeti Migration. Each park gets a complete, full wildlife day. Nothing is rushed, nothing is transited.

Safari Overview

The Northern Circuit in Three Complete Days

The 3-day Tanzania Safari is the most complete short safari available in northern Tanzania without the Serengeti — three parks, three full days, and three completely different wildlife habitats. It is designed for travellers who have three days available and want the full depth and variety of Tanzania's northern circuit, with the Ngorongoro Crater as the centrepiece and Tarangire and Lake Manyara as complementary but distinctly extraordinary additions.

Day 1 belongs to Tarangire — a complete afternoon arrival and full morning of elephant-focused game driving in the park's baobab savanna. Day 2 opens with a morning game drive in Lake Manyara National Park — one of Tanzania's most distinctive parks, famous for its tree-climbing lions, flamingo shores, and dense groundwater forest — before the afternoon drive to the Ngorongoro crater rim for overnight. Day 3 is a complete dawn-to-afternoon inside the Ngorongoro Crater, followed by the return drive to Arusha.

This is the northern Tanzania safari for those who want breadth and depth over the Serengeti migration specifically. All three parks are covered in full, all Big Five are genuinely achievable, and every essential wildlife habitat in the northern circuit — savanna, soda lake, forest, and caldera — is experienced. For those who also want the Serengeti, the 4-day or 5-day safari adds it without compromising the time in any of these three parks.

Tarangire elephant herd
Tarangire — Tanzania's elephant heartland

Tarangire National Park holds the highest elephant density in Tanzania. The Tarangire River is a year-round water source that draws enormous concentrations of wildlife during the dry season — herds of 300 or more elephants are a daily occurrence. The ancient baobab woodland that lines the river's banks is one of Tanzania's most photogenic landscapes. Beyond the elephants, Tarangire is one of the finest predator parks in the northern circuit — lion, leopard, and cheetah are all resident, and the concentration of prey animals makes game drives consistently productive.

Lake Manyara flamingos
Lake Manyara — a park like no other in Tanzania

Lake Manyara National Park is one of Tanzania's most distinctive wildlife destinations — occupying a narrow strip of land between the soda lake and the Rift Valley escarpment, with a series of ecosystems stacked one above the other. The groundwater forest at the park's northern entrance is one of the finest birding habitats in East Africa (400+ species). The open floodplains host buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, and hippo pools. The lake shore turns pink with flamingo flocks. And somewhere in the fever tree woodland, the tree-climbing lions unique to this population rest in the branches — a behaviour found nowhere else in East Africa.

Ngorongoro Crater
Ngorongoro Crater — Africa's greatest single wildlife day

The Ngorongoro Crater is the most wildlife-dense location in Africa and one of the wonders of the natural world. The 260 km² caldera holds approximately 25,000 large mammals year-round — the highest density of wildlife on Earth for a single enclosed ecosystem. For the 3-day safari, the Crater day is the summit experience: a full dawn-to-afternoon inside the caldera, beginning with black rhino tracking at first light and working through the crater lions, leopard in the Lerai Forest, hippo pool, and flamingo shores before the late afternoon ascent and return to Arusha.

Safari camp on crater rim
Ideal for Kilimanjaro combinations — 10 days total

The 3-day Tanzania Safari is the second most popular Kilimanjaro combination after the 2-day version. A 7-day Kilimanjaro climb (Machame route) plus the 3-day safari runs exactly 10 days — very achievable within a two-week Tanzania trip with travel days factored in. The 3-day safari significantly upgrades the 2-day version by adding Lake Manyara, giving a much richer variety of wildlife habitats for just one additional day. We offer combined package pricing with reduced total cost for all Kilimanjaro and safari combinations.

Day-by-Day Programme

3-Day Tanzania Safari Itinerary

  1. The safari opens with a 2.5-hour drive southwest from Arusha or Moshi to Tarangire National Park — Tanzania's foremost elephant destination and one of the most visually distinctive parks in East Africa. The afternoon game drive begins immediately upon arrival at the gate, covering the Tarangire River zone where the largest elephant concentrations gather and the ancient baobab woodland that stretches south along the river's banks.

    1. 07:30
Pickup from Arusha or Moshi hotel

Meet your expert naturalist guide. Drive southwest toward Tarangire through the Rift Valley foothills. The park gate is approximately 2.5 hours from Arusha, 3 hours from Moshi.

    2. 10:30
Enter Tarangire National Park — game drive begins

Begin the game drive along the Tarangire River. Elephant herds of 300+ frequently encountered in the riverbed. Lion, leopard, and cheetah in the riverine woodland. Ground hornbills calling in the baobab canopy.

    3. 13:00
Bush lunch at the Tarangire River

Lunch boxes served at the riverside picnic site. Game drive continues immediately — the afternoon light is the finest for the baobab landscape and elephant photography.

    4. 14:30
Afternoon drives — baobab woodland and elephant tracking

The guide moves into the baobab woodland following elephant family groups. The afternoon savanna is also excellent for cheetah on the open southern plains. Giraffe, eland, oryx, and lesser kudu in the woodland fringe.

    5. 18:00
Arrive Tarangire camp — sundowner and dinner

Welcome briefing at camp. Sundowner drinks overlooking the Tarangire River. Dinner under the stars. Buffalo and zebra often visible at the camp perimeter at dusk.

  2. Day 2 opens with a morning game drive in Lake Manyara National Park — one of Tanzania's most unusual and rewarding wildlife destinations. The park occupies a narrow strip between the alkaline lake and the Rift Valley escarpment, and its concentrated diversity is extraordinary. Tree-climbing lions are the park's most famous phenomenon — a behaviour unique to this population, believed to be a response to buffalo competition at ground level. After the Manyara morning, the road climbs the Ngorongoro escarpment to the crater rim, where the most wildlife-dense location in Africa waits 600 metres below for tomorrow's dawn descent.

    1. 06:30
Dawn departure from Tarangire — drive to Lake Manyara

Early morning drive north from Tarangire camp. Arrive at Lake Manyara National Park gate approximately 08:00. The park is at its best in the early morning when the forest is cool and the lake birds are most active.

    2. 08:00
Enter Lake Manyara — forest and flamingo shores

Begin in the groundwater forest — lush, green, and alive with birdsong. Yellow baboon troops forage in the forest floor. Blue monkeys in the canopy. The forest opens onto the lake floodplains where hippo pools and buffalo herds occupy the shallows.

    3. 09:00
      Tree-climbing lions — the park's extraordinary phenomenon

Your guide uses the network intelligence to locate the tree-climbing lion prides. Lions sprawled along the horizontal branches of large fever trees — a behaviour found nowhere else in East Africa. The sight of a pride of lions in a tree above the Manyara floodplain is one of Tanzania's most extraordinary wildlife moments.

    4. 10:30
Lake shores — flamingo and hippo pools

Drive to the lake shore. Flamingo flocks turn the lake pink. Hippo pods in the shallows — one of Manyara's most photographed scenes. 400+ bird species in this single park, including marabou stork, pelican, African spoonbill, and countless waders.

    5. 12:30
Depart Lake Manyara — bush lunch en route to Ngorongoro

Lunch boxes eaten at the park exit. Drive north along the Rift Valley floor, then up the Oldeani escarpment into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The road climbs through highland forest and Maasai community land.

    6. 16:00
Arrive Ngorongoro crater rim — first view of the caldera

Your first sight of the Ngorongoro Crater — 260 km² of unbroken wildlife sanctuary 600 m below the rim. Sundowner drinks on the crater rim at sunset. Dinner with the crater sounds rising from below. Tomorrow begins before dawn.

  3. The summit of the 3-day safari — a full dawn-to-afternoon inside the Ngorongoro Crater, Africa's most wildlife-dense sanctuary. Approximately 25,000 large mammals in a single 260 km² caldera, all resident year-round: the famous crater lion prides, the best black rhino population in Africa, 5,000+ buffalo, 4,000 zebra, 7,000 wildebeest, and the Lerai Forest leopards. A complete day inside the crater with a picnic lunch on the crater floor, followed by the late afternoon ascent and the return drive to Arusha.

    1. 05:30
Pre-dawn departure — drive to crater descent gate

Leave the rim lodge before first light. The crater descent gate opens at 6:00 am. Your guide uses overnight guide network intelligence to plan the morning's black rhino positioning — the most critical first hour of the day.

    2. 06:00
Descent into the Ngorongoro Crater at first light

600 m of dramatic escarpment road. The crater floor emerges from morning mist. Inside Africa's most perfect wildlife sanctuary by 6:30 am. The guide drives directly to the black rhino zone while the morning light is low and the crater is at its most atmospheric.

    3. 07:00
Black rhino tracking — best opportunity in Africa

The crater's black rhino population (~30 individuals) is the morning's primary target. Your guide uses overnight network intelligence to identify the most recent sightings and positions accordingly. The Ngorongoro Crater offers the highest black rhino encounter probability anywhere in Africa.

    4. 09:30
Crater lions and the open caldera floor

The extraordinary crater lion prides with their distinctive thick manes — a product of the isolated gene pool within the caldera walls. Buffalo herds of 5,000+ on the open crater floor. Golden jackals, spotted hyena, and bat-eared fox in the short grass. The entire crater floor visible in every direction from inside the caldera.

    5. 11:00
Lerai Forest — leopard habitat and hippo pool

The yellow-barked acacia forest in the crater's south is the habitat of the crater's resident leopard. The famous hippo pool at the forest's edge — hippos out of the water in the morning shade. Yellow-billed storks and sacred ibis feeding in the shallows.

    6. 13:00
Picnic lunch on the crater floor

Lunch boxes eaten with the entire crater and its 600-metre walls visible in every direction. Vultures wheel overhead. Continue driving immediately — the afternoon crater brings different species into activity.

    7. 15:30
Crater ascent — drive to Arusha

Ascend the crater and drive east toward Arusha. The road descends the Oldeani escarpment through Maasai community land and highland forest. 3-hour return drive. Arrive Arusha approximately 19:00.

    8. 19:00
Drop off at Arusha hotel or KIA airport

End of safari services. Three days. Three parks. Tanzania in full — except the migration. Asante sana.

What our 3-day Tanzania safari guests say

Keiko T.
★★★★★
Keiko T. — Japan

"I chose the 3-day northern circuit over the Serengeti because I wanted the Ngorongoro Crater and I wanted Tarangire — and I am so glad I did. The Tarangire elephants on day one were extraordinary. The tree-climbing lions at Lake Manyara on day two were something I did not believe existed until I saw them. The Crater was beyond words."

Antoine M. — France

"Post-Kilimanjaro with three days to spare. The guide was exceptional — finding us black rhino within half an hour of entering the crater, then the lion pride with four cubs in the afternoon. Lake Manyara surprised me the most — I had expected a secondary park and it was extraordinary. The flamingo lake was otherworldly."

Sarah J. — Australia

"I chose this over the Serengeti safari because I specifically wanted three parks, not just the migration. The variety was the point. Three completely different ecosystems in three days — the baobab savanna, the rift lake forest, and the caldera — delivered more diversity than any longer single-park safari I have done elsewhere in Africa."

Frequently Asked Questions

  • The two 3-day safaris are built for different priorities. The 3-day Serengeti Migration Safari visits only the Ngorongoro Crater (Day 2 transit) and the Serengeti (Day 3) — with the primary focus on the Great Wildebeest Migration. The 3-day Tanzania Northern Circuit Safari (this page) visits Tarangire, Lake Manyara, and the Ngorongoro Crater — covering the full diversity of the northern circuit's southern parks, with the Ngorongoro Crater as the summit. If the Great Migration is your priority, choose the 3-day Serengeti safari. If three different parks, three different ecosystems, and the Ngorongoro Crater in full are the priority — without the Serengeti specifically — choose this safari. Many guests opt for the 4-day safari, which adds the Serengeti to the Tarangire and Ngorongoro experience without compromise.
  • Lake Manyara is one of Tanzania's most distinctive parks and absolutely worth a morning. The tree-climbing lion population is unique in East Africa — this behaviour is found nowhere else, and it is extraordinary to witness. The flamingo lake, the groundwater forest, and the sheer density of bird species make Manyara a park that rewards even experienced safari-goers. On this itinerary, Manyara receives a full morning game drive, which is the optimal amount of time to cover its key wildlife zones. If you are choosing between Manyara and a second Tarangire day, we always recommend Manyara — the habitat diversity and the tree-climbing lions make it irreplaceable. The 2-day safari drops Manyara in favour of more Tarangire time — the 3-day adds Manyara without reducing either Tarangire or the Ngorongoro Crater.
  • The 3-day Tanzania Northern Circuit Safari costs from $1,100 per person (shared vehicle, comfortable lodges) to $2,900 per person (luxury exclusive lodges with private guide and bush walks). The mid-range private vehicle package at $1,750 per person is the most popular choice — a private vehicle, premium en-suite tented camps in Tarangire, and a premium crater rim lodge on Night 2. All packages include all park fees, 2 nights accommodation, all meals from Day 1 dinner to Day 3 lunch, expert guiding, and airport transfers. International flights and visa are not included.
  • Yes — the 3-day safari is an excellent Kilimanjaro add-on. A 7-day Machame climb plus the 3-day safari runs exactly 10 days total. The Day 1 drive to Tarangire from Moshi is approximately 3 hours — manageable as a post-summit first day even for tired climbers. Day 1 is also the most relaxed day of the safari (an afternoon arrival game drive), which suits guests who need a gentle re-entry after altitude. By Day 2 and Day 3, most post-Kilimanjaro guests are energised by the wildlife and the warmth of the lowland savanna. We offer combined package pricing for all Kilimanjaro and safari combinations, with reduced total cost.
  • All seasons are rewarding on this itinerary — both the Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara hold resident wildlife year-round, and Tarangire's elephant herds are reliably encountered across all months. For the greatest Tarangire wildlife concentration, the dry season (June–October) is optimal: the Tarangire River draws tens of thousands of animals from across the ecosystem, producing Tanzania's most dramatic elephant and predator concentrations. For Lake Manyara's flamingo, the short rains (November–December) produce the highest lake levels and flamingo numbers. For the Ngorongoro Crater, all twelve months are equally excellent — the crater's resident mammal population does not vary significantly by season. April–May (long rains) offers the lowest prices, fewest visitors, and lush green scenery across all three parks.
  • If the Great Wildebeest Migration is a specific goal, we recommend upgrading to the 4-day Serengeti Migration Safari, which adds one full Serengeti day to this exact three-park circuit. The price difference between the 3-day and 4-day safari is approximately $280 per person — which adds one complete Serengeti day with the migration herds. If you have four days available, the 4-day safari is our strongest recommendation. The 5-day Serengeti safari adds a second Serengeti day, significantly increasing crossing probability during the Mara River season and delivering a much more comprehensive migration experience. If three days is the absolute maximum and the Serengeti is not a priority — or if this safari is chosen specifically because Tarangire, Manyara, and the Crater are the focus — then the 3-day northern circuit is a complete and deeply rewarding experience in its own right.
