Day 1 belongs to Tarangire — a complete afternoon arrival and full morning of elephant-focused game driving in the park's baobab savanna. Day 2 opens with a morning game drive in Lake Manyara National Park — one of Tanzania's most distinctive parks, famous for its tree-climbing lions, flamingo shores, and dense groundwater forest — before the afternoon drive to the Ngorongoro crater rim for overnight. The safari opens with a 2.5-hour drive southwest from Arusha or Moshi to Tarangire National Park — Tanzania's foremost elephant destination and one of the most visually distinctive parks in East Africa. The afternoon game drive begins immediately upon arrival at the gate, covering the Tarangire River zone where the largest elephant concentrations gather and the ancient baobab woodland that stretches south along the river's banks.
Meet your expert naturalist guide. Drive southwest toward Tarangire through the Rift Valley foothills. The park gate is approximately 2.5 hours from Arusha, 3 hours from Moshi.
Begin the game drive along the Tarangire River. Elephant herds of 300+ frequently encountered in the riverbed. Lion, leopard, and cheetah in the riverine woodland. Ground hornbills calling in the baobab canopy.

Tree-climbing lions are the park's most famous phenomenon — a behaviour unique to this population, believed to be a response to buffalo competition at ground level. After the Manyara morning, the road climbs the Ngorongoro escarpment to the crater rim, where the most wildlife-dense location in Africa waits 600 metres below for tomorrow's dawn descent.
