Safari Overview
Two Days. Two Extraordinary Parks.
The 2-day Tanzania Safari is designed for travellers with precisely two days available — whether between flights, after a Kilimanjaro climb, or as a focused short safari at the beginning or end of a longer Tanzania itinerary. It visits two of Tanzania's most rewarding wildlife destinations in full, with no partial days or transit compromises. Day 1 belongs entirely to Tarangire. Day 2 belongs entirely to the Ngorongoro Crater.
Tarangire National Park is Tanzania's elephant sanctuary — home to more elephants per square kilometre than any other park in the country. Herds of 300 or more are regularly encountered along the Tarangire River, moving between the water and the ancient baobab woodland that lines the river's banks. This is also one of Tanzania's finest predator parks: lion, leopard, cheetah, and wild dog are all resident, and the riverine landscape concentrates game for excellent game drives throughout the day.
The Ngorongoro Crater needs no superlatives. The world's largest intact volcanic caldera and the most wildlife-dense location in Africa — approximately 25,000 large mammals in 260 km², going nowhere. The crater's resident population includes the famous crater lion prides with their uniquely thick manes, the highest density of black rhino in Africa (~30 individuals), 5,000+ buffalo, 4,000 zebra, and the hippo pool and flamingo shores of the Lerai Forest section. A full dawn-to-afternoon inside the crater is one of the greatest single wildlife days in East Africa.
Tarangire holds the highest elephant density in Tanzania. During the dry season (June–October), the Tarangire River is one of the few permanent water sources in the region, drawing thousands of elephants, zebra, buffalo, and predators from the surrounding landscape. During the wet season (November–May), the herds disperse across the ecosystem but the park's resident wildlife remains extraordinary. Year-round, Tarangire delivers the most intimate elephant family encounters in East Africa — calves playing in river mud, matriarchs leading herds between the ancient baobabs, and bulls sparring in the morning light.
A full Ngorongoro Crater day is the most rewarding single wildlife day in all of East Africa — consistent, concentrated, and extraordinary in every season. The crater's resident mammal population does not migrate. The black rhino are always here. The crater lions are always here. The hippo pool, the 5,000 buffalo, the flamingo shores of Lake Magadi — all present year-round. For a two-day safari, having one of the two days inside the Ngorongoro Crater is the highest-return choice available. No other single location in Tanzania delivers this density and diversity of wildlife in one contained game drive area.
The 2-day Tanzania Safari is the most compact multi-park safari add-on available for Kilimanjaro climbers. A 7-day Kilimanjaro climb (Machame route) plus the 2-day safari runs exactly 9 days — achievable within a standard 10–11 day Tanzania trip when travel days are included. Both depart from Moshi and share the same guide infrastructure. We offer combined package pricing with reduced total cost. For those who want the mountain and Africa's finest wildlife sanctuary in a single trip, this is the most efficient possible combination.
Day-by-Day Programme
2-Day Tanzania Safari Itinerary
-
Day 1 begins in Arusha or Moshi with a 2.5-hour drive southwest to Tarangire National Park. The full day is spent inside the park — game driving along the Tarangire River, through the iconic baobab woodland, and into the open savanna of the park's southern sectors. This is Tanzania's most productive elephant park, and the guide focuses the morning on the river where the largest family groups congregate, before moving to the woodland for predator tracking in the afternoon. The overnight is on the Ngorongoro crater rim, positioning perfectly for tomorrow's dawn descent.
-
07:00Pickup from Arusha or Moshi — depart for Tarangire
Meet your expert naturalist guide. Drive southwest through the East African Rift Valley landscape. The Tarangire River valley comes into view as the road descends toward the park gate.
-
10:00Enter Tarangire National Park — morning river game drive
Begin the morning game drive immediately upon entry. The Tarangire River is the morning's primary destination — herds of 300+ elephant, buffalo, and zebra at the water. Lion and leopard active in the riverine woodland. Ground hornbills calling in the baobab canopy.
-
13:00Bush lunch at Tarangire River viewpoint
Lunch boxes served at a picnic site overlooking the river. Continue the game drive immediately after — the afternoon light on the baobabs is the park's finest photographic window.
-
14:00Afternoon drives — baobab woodland and predator tracking
Your guide moves into the baobab woodland for elephant family group tracking and predator searching. Cheetah on the open savanna to the south. Lion in the riverine thicket. Giraffe and eland among the ancient trees.
-
17:30Sundowner at a baobab viewpoint — depart for Ngorongoro
Drinks at a baobab viewpoint as the sun drops. Drive north to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The escarpment road climbs through Maasai community land in the evening light. Arrive crater rim lodge approximately 20:00.
-
20:00Arrive Ngorongoro crater rim lodge — dinner and briefing
Dinner with the crater visible below in the darkness. The guide briefs the descent strategy and guide network intelligence for tomorrow's black rhino positioning. Early night — tomorrow begins before dawn.

The centrepiece of the 2-day safari and one of the greatest single wildlife days available anywhere in East Africa. A full dawn-to-departure day inside the Ngorongoro Crater — the world's most wildlife-dense sanctuary. Approximately 25,000 large mammals in 260 km², all resident year-round. The guide descends at first light and goes directly to the most recent black rhino sighting location, identified from the overnight guide network. The full day covers the crater floor, the Lerai Forest, the hippo pool, and the Magadi Lake flamingo shores before the afternoon ascent and return drive to Arusha.
-
05:30Pre-dawn departure — crater descent gate
Leave the rim lodge before first light. Drive to the descent gate, which opens at 6:00 am. Your guide uses overnight network intelligence to plan the morning's black rhino positioning — the most productive time for a sighting is the first 90 minutes in the crater.
-
06:00Descent into the Ngorongoro Crater
600 m of dramatic escarpment road. The crater floor emerges from morning mist. Inside Africa's most perfect wildlife sanctuary by 6:30 am. The guide drives directly to the black rhino zone.
-
07:00Black rhino tracking
The crater's black rhino population is the morning's primary target — the best black rhino encounter in Africa. Your guide positions based on overnight network intelligence. With good positioning, black rhino sightings are highly probable in the first morning hours.
-
09:30Crater lions and the open caldera floor
The famous crater lion prides with their unique thick manes — a consequence of the isolated gene pool in this caldera. Buffalo herds of 5,000+ on the open crater floor. Zebra and wildebeest grazing in vast numbers. The sheer scale of the wildlife inside the crater walls is unlike anything else in East Africa.
-
11:00Lerai Forest — leopard and hippo pool
The acacia forest in the crater's south is prime leopard habitat. The famous hippo pool at the forest's edge — hippos out of the water in the morning shade. Yellow-billed storks and jacanas in the shallows.
-
13:00Picnic lunch on the crater floor
Lunch boxes eaten with the entire 260 km² crater and its walls visible in every direction. Back to drives immediately after. The afternoon crater floor in different light reveals different wildlife behaviour.
-
16:00Crater ascent — return drive to Arusha
Exit the crater. Drive east across the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The road descends the escarpment through Maasai community land and highland forest. 3-hour drive to Arusha. Arrive approximately 19:30.
-
19:30Arrive Arusha — drop off at hotel or KIA airport
End of safari services. Asante sana — thank you. Two days. Two extraordinary parks. Tanzania in full.

What our 2-day safari guests say

"I had two days between climbing Kilimanjaro and my flight home. The Tarangire elephants on Day 1 were unlike anything I had ever seen — a herd of over two hundred animals moving between the river and the baobabs in the afternoon light. The Ngorongoro Crater on Day 2 was the most extraordinary place I have ever been in my life."

"Business trip to Nairobi with a two-day Tanzania window. Our guide had us in the Ngorongoro Crater at 6:30 am and we found the black rhino within twenty minutes. Then crater lions. Then a leopard in the Lerai Forest. Two days was more wildlife than I have seen in years of travel. The guide's preparation made the difference."

"I was honest with myself — two days, no more. The guide recommended Tarangire and the Crater over any other combination and he was absolutely right. The Crater on Day 2 was the single greatest wildlife experience of my life — 25,000 animals in one valley. I am already planning to return for the full Serengeti migration."

Frequently Asked Questions
-
The Serengeti is approximately a 5–6 hour drive from Arusha. Including it in a 2-day safari would mean spending 10–12 hours driving on two days — leaving almost no time for game drives. Tarangire is 2.5 hours away and the Ngorongoro Crater is 3.5 hours away. Both are reachable in time for a full day of game driving without the dead time of a long Serengeti transfer. For two days, Tarangire and the Ngorongoro Crater is the most wildlife-productive combination available in northern Tanzania. The Crater alone delivers one of Africa's greatest single wildlife days. If the Serengeti and the Great Migration are priorities, we recommend upgrading to our 3-day or 4-day safari, which adds the Serengeti without compromising Ngorongoro or Tarangire.

The 2-day Tarangire and Ngorongoro safari is excellent year-round — both parks hold resident wildlife that does not migrate with the Serengeti herds. For Tarangire, the dry season (June–October) is the most productive: the Tarangire River concentrates tens of thousands of animals from across the ecosystem, and the wildlife density is at its peak. The wet season (November–May) is quieter, greener, and the elephant herds disperse more widely, but are still reliably encountered in large numbers. For the Ngorongoro Crater, all seasons are exceptional — the crater's 25,000 large mammals are resident year-round, including the black rhino, crater lions, and hippo. The crater floor is at its most photogenic during the short rains (November), when the lake fills and flamingo numbers peak. The long rains (April–May) bring the lowest visitor numbers of the year and lush green scenery. All months are worthwhile.

The 2-day Tanzania Safari costs from $720 per person (shared vehicle, comfortable lodges) to $2,100 per person (luxury exclusive crater rim lodge with private guide and bush walks). The mid-range private vehicle package at $1,180 per person is the most popular choice, offering a private vehicle, premium en-suite tented camps, and a private naturalist guide throughout both days. All packages include all park fees, 1 night accommodation, all meals, expert guiding, and airport transfers from Arusha or Moshi. International flights and visa are not included.
-
Yes — the 2-day safari is our most compact Kilimanjaro combination. A 7-day Kilimanjaro climb (Machame route) plus the 2-day safari runs 9 days total — achievable within a 10–11 day Tanzania trip when travel days are factored in. A 6-day Marangu route plus the 2-day safari runs 8 days. Both combinations depart from Moshi and use the same guide infrastructure. We manage all logistics between mountain and bush and offer combined package pricing with reduced total cost. For guests who find the 2-day combination leaves them wanting more wildlife, the 3-day safari (with the Serengeti added) is an easy upgrade — requiring just one more day of leave.
-
Yes — the 2-day safari returns to Arusha on the evening of Day 2. After the Ngorongoro Crater descent (approximately 16:00), the vehicle drives east across the conservation area and down the escarpment to Arusha, arriving approximately 19:30. This means you can take an evening flight from Kilimanjaro International Airport on Day 2, though we recommend checking the flight time against the 19:30 estimated arrival — early evening flights may be tight. For late evening or next-morning flights, the timing is comfortable. An additional Arusha hotel night is not included in the safari packages but is easily arranged on request.
-
The 2-day safari visits Tarangire and the Ngorongoro Crater — two extraordinary parks, both covered in full. The 3-day safari drops Tarangire and adds the Serengeti, delivering the Ngorongoro Crater on Day 2 and a full Serengeti migration day on Day 3. The 4-day safari keeps Tarangire, the Ngorongoro Crater, and adds the Serengeti — the most complete short itinerary without compromise. The key trade-off on the 2-day safari: you get the Crater and Tarangire in full, but not the Serengeti. If the Great Migration is your primary goal, we recommend the 3-day or 4-day safari. If the Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire elephants are the priority, the 2-day safari delivers both without compromise.
